The director of olfactive creation at Hermès Parfums breaks down Tutti Twilly's unique key ingredients, including lychee and ginger

Hermès Parfums will be launching Tutti Twilly d’Hermès on September 1, 2023. Created by renowned perfumer and director of olfactive creation, Christine Nagel, the latest iteration of the beloved Twilly d'Hermès fragrance is its most playful formulation yet—with invigorating notes of lychee, musk, and distinctive ginger notes. The signature silk ribbon can be found on the bottle with a white lid on the bottle.

Ahead of its release, Tatler speaks to Nagel about what inspired this new fragrance, how it came to life and why it is a celebration of sisterhood and female friendships.

Tutti Twilly D’Hermès shares a story of sisterhood, banding together and enjoying life. How does the new scent capture this essence?

Perhaps more than the notion of sisterhood that had guided me until then, while I was creating it, I thought of the generations of young girls that come one after another. An endless story to which we ourselves, our mothers and our daughters all belong. These unique yet similar stories are brimming with paradoxes, insouciance and discipline, lightness combined with a keen sense of the issues of the future, with pure joy and meaningful choices. These stories are so inspiring through time.

For every generation all over the world, this stage of life where everything is possible is as brief as it is intense. This strength and the joy of being a woman permeates them, inspires me, and gives me an irresistible urge to bring them to life in a fragrance.

What makes the new Tutti Twilly special?

I probably wouldn’t have distilled this promise of fascinating women if I hadn’t been able to extract new expressions from the fragrance. Ginger is without a doubt one of the more multi-faceted raw materials. I discovered ginger blossom when I heard a pastry chef talking about his passion for this rhizome. The blossom tastes undeniably like ginger but with a softer, gentler flavour that is perhaps more refined. To accompany its delicate nature, I chose ethereal lychee and enveloping musk.

How would you describe the scent of Tutti Twilly, and what emotions does it evoke for you?

Each person will experience their own emotion depending on their story. The special thing about our olfactory system is that it seems to be directly connected to our emotional brain. Beyond identifying a smell, our brains associate it with an emotion or emotional context and memorises it. In my eyes, Tutti Twilly is cheerful, colourful and carefree.

Spicy ginger, sweet lychee, and musk make for an interesting scent profile. How did you know this was ‘it’ for the new Tutti Twilly? Can you walk us through the process?

This creation wasn’t planned, but two things happened simultaneously that convinced me to take on this project and develop Tutti Twilly.

I realised that the story of these young women will never come to an end and that the budding femininity of each new generation expresses creativity, ingenuity, and a uniquely youthful spirit. For every generation all over the world, this stage of life where everything is possible is as brief as it is intense. This strength and the joy of being a woman permeates them, inspires me, and gives me an irresistible urge to bring them to life in a fragrance. The other thing was the surprising discovery of a new expression of ginger.

Did you have a muse or what inspired the new scent?

There was no muse. It goes much deeper than that; the boldness of youth is still a major source of inspiration for me.

Like its predecessors, Tutti Twilly is inspired by the young girls of today, these creative and mischievous young girls whose femininity is emerging and who like to play with convention. As a tribute to their youthful spirit, their love of doing and undoing, of being themselves and reinventing themselves, I wanted to offer a new twist, a different expression of Twilly that reveals the timeless facet of their personalities.

What are some of your favourite moments as a perfumer for Hermès?

I have so many! I experience several every day. They stem from the marvellous encounters I have at Hermès, the richness of its history, and the pride I have from being a part of it. The values of Hermès nourish my everyday work and that of my staff. But if I had to choose, it would be the incredible creative freedom I enjoy, which allows me to go where no one else can go.
