Bryson DeChambeau recently won his first US Open while wearing a Rolex Sky-Dweller

From one-length irons to his custom-made graphite shafted clubs, professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau has never been averse to doing things his own way. At just 27 years old, the California native has been grabbing headlines for his 320-kilometre-per-hour swing speeds and for increasing his driving distances off the tee, skills that resulted in his winning the 2020 US Open this September.

DeChambeau is no stranger to victory. He has come out on top at six PGA Tour events since arriving on the scene in 2017, and secured second place at the World Golf Championships in Mexico in March before the coronavirus pandemic took hold. He finished fourth in the PGA Championship in August and has won a US Amateur and an NCAA Championship.

For those of us who know a thing or two about watches, it’s easy to be drawn to the ticker that adorns DeChambeau’s wrist when he’s on the course. During four days of impressive and powerful play at the 2020 US Open, the Rolex brand ambassador wore a Sky-Dweller in steel, complete with a white gold bezel. This provides Rolex with double cause for celebration, as this year also marks the watchmaker’s 40th anniversary as the Official Timekeeper of this world-famous tournament.

It’s just an honour. I don’t know what else to say. It’s been a lot of hard work.

Rolex ambassadors Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Tom Watson, Tiger Woods and Brooks Koepka are among the champions to have risen to the occasion at this event. This year’s venue, Winged Foot Golf Club in New York, presented particularly challenging conditions that made play difficult, so much so that DeChambeau was the only person in the field to break par on the final day.

“It’s just an honour,” says DeChambeau. “I don’t know what else to say. It’s been a lot of hard work.”

He gives special thanks to Rolex. “I’d be remiss not to talk about my sponsors and the people who have affected me. They’ve all been there supporting me through tough times and the good times. They’ve been incredible for me.”
