Go inside the making of the shimmering mermaid gown that Licorice Pizza star Alana Haim graced the red carpet in
This year’s Oscars was not short of sparkle but that made Alana Haim’s red carpet arrival no less breathtaking.
Ditching her California cool girl image for the special night, the Licorice Pizza actress was the picture of elegance in her custom Louis Vuitton gown, which glittered with glass beads and paillettes inspired by the scales of a mermaid. The dreamy shimmer of her dress was all the more obvious when she stood with her sisters and bandmates, Este and Danielle Haim.

For all its sparkling simplicity, Haim’s gown called for the kind of complex craftsmanship that can only be achieved in the ateliers of Louis Vuitton.
The artisans of the French luxury brand brought creative director Nicolas Ghesquière's vision to life by embroidering each glass bead and paillette by hand onto the gown’s silk mousseline fabric. It took the atelier a total of 420 hours to finish the embroidery alone.
It continues all the way down to the hem and the train of the dress, which is also adorned with the Art Deco-style scalloping seen all over the dress. After embellishing it in sequins and beads, it took Louis Vuitton’s artisans another 170 hours to assemble the gown.
