Cover Andrew Gn steps down from fashion to focus on art and legacy building

After close to three decades in the industry, designer Andrew Gn bids farewell to the fashion world to focus on art and his legacy

Local designer Andrew Gn sent fans and retailers reeling today with the announcement of the closure of his namesake brand. After 28 years in fashion—comprising 80 collections and over 10,000 designs—Gn is bidding the industry au revoir. “I’ve always considered it a luxury to be able to do something that I truly love as my career … I’d like to spend the following years continuing to build Andrew Gn legacy, and giving back inasmuch I can,” he shares in an Instagram post.

Gn’s last collections are the holiday capsules and cruise 2024, which are still available in stores.

Meanwhile, ongoing orders from private clients will continue to be fulfilled as scheduled. The brand will remain at its headquarters in Paris for the foreseeable future, with operations taking at least a year to wind down. Following that, Gn’s namesake company will be put in dormancy.

But that doesn’t mean Gn is retiring. The designer’s retrospective exhibition at the Asian Civilisations Museum, Andrew Gn: Fashioning Singapore and the World, is slated to be shown at various museums in the US. Following that, Gn has further plans to bring the showcase back to other parts of Asia.

Calling it the “beginning of a new chapter”, Gn’s departure from fashion will allow him to dedicate time to other interests like art and legacy building. Also on his to-do list is establishing his own foundation, an idea explored in his retrospective. The foundation will function as a platform for Gn to support the new generation of young designers, through sharing his experience and supporting them in their journey as they make their foray into the industry.

Reflecting on the bittersweet ending of a nearly three-decade-long career, “this was infinitely precious because it has enabled me to create exactly the way I wanted. It has been an eventful and successful journey,” Gn shares.
