These interesting individuals on Asia’s Most Stylish prove that great fashion exists everywhere

The diverse assembly of individuals showcased on Asia’s Most Stylish 2023 demonstrates that fashion extends beyond the confines of runways and magazines. As seen in the lives of these artists, musicians, technologists and executives, different environments allow style to manifest in a multitude of ways: an artist’s creative endeavours give rise to an inclination for experimental expressions, while childhood experiences instil a preference for the well-made. Ultimately, what emerges is a reflection of personal taste and individuality. Here’s what you can learn from this year’s best-dressed honourees.

“The most random things can be made well and I’ll just be amazed by them. I really like things that are designed well,” says Dawn Ang, the multimedia visual artist whose work spans everything from murals and installations to postcards and album art. Also known as Aeropalmics, Ang’s vibrant style—cheerful images dosed with colour—has attracted fashion and lifestyle heavyweights, leading to a very interesting portfolio that includes rabbit sculptures for Bulgari’s Chinese New Year celebration, temporary tattoos for Johnny Walker and even an NFT collection for Tatler Gen.T. The variety in her work is also seen in the way she dresses: an adopter of “all kinds of styles”, Ang is comfortable in a cosy patchwork pullover, a neon puffer vest, super baggy jean shorts and, of course, her breezy buzz cut.

Apart from working with local greats such as Jolin Tsai and A-Mei, music producer and rapper Starr Chen has collaborated with global superstars Blackpink for the girl group’s headlining set at Coachella in April 2023. The prolific creative, who established the music company and artist management company Chill Entertainment, was also a judge on the second season of MTV The Rappers, where he showed off his flair for fashion. Chen, who sports streetwear staples such as graphic tees and track jackets, revealed to Tatler how he likes to hunt for vintage clothing that he would then modify to fit his style. He offers one shopping tip: stylish clothes need not be expensive—what’s most important is that you like them.

Roshan Valiram, director of food and beverage, Valiram Group (Malaysia)

When it comes to fashion, Roshan Valiram is drawn to the uncommon and the singular, adding, in an interview with Tatler, that the constant in her wardrobe is the “...uniqueness in the pieces I wear”. Two influences led to her predilection: her mother, who asserted that if “you’re going to dress up, you must be able to wow” and her time in the Philippines, where she was born and grew up. In Manila, her mother would often have custom clothes made, including a dress for her eighth birthday—experiences that would spark her appreciation for bespoke wear. Today, the director of food and beverage immerses herself in quality experiences, from the fine establishments she manages for the Valiram Group to the one-of-kind pieces by Asian designers that she wears.

From being crowned the winner of the Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers’ Contest in 2022, Vicky Tsang has found herself in the thick of the fashion scene, with her 3D-printed pieces featured in magazine editorials and worn by entertainers such as Mirror’s Edan Lui. Through her studio Gnastiy.com, the avante-garde designer champions the application of 3D printing in wearable clothing to explore the idea of merging the virtual and the real. The result is surreal pieces inspired by expressions of technology: a futuristic shoulder bag with a mirror finish, a dress that mimics the violent swirl of water and a coat accented by a column of frozen pixels.

Available now on Kifu Paris, the home accessories and furniture line by Kifu Augousti, is a pen-shell-and-brass bowl with an amorphous shape and a floor lamp characterised by a dramatic bronze-patinated base. The creative is drawn to quirky design, often incorporating interesting materials such as inlay patterns of shagreen, shells and semi-precious stones into her home pieces. Augousti’s style is equally daring, with the creations of Nensi Dojaka (known for her sensual bodywear and lingerie-inspired dresses) and Olivier Theyskens (a personal friend who creates bespoke pieces for her) becoming staples in her closet.
