The maison is pulling out all the stops for its first-ever fashion show in Africa
Chanel’s extravagant Métiers d’Art fashion shows have travelled far and wide, with past presentations taking place in cities like Tokyo, Shanghai, New York, Florence and Rome. This December 6, it’ll make its way to Dakar, the capital of Senegal.
This marks the first time that Chanel is heading to Africa, and unsurprisingly, the French fashion brand plans to make a splash. The Chanel Métiers d’Art 2023 fashion show will be part of a three-day festival that spotlights Dakar-based creatives across the fields of music, film and art.
“Dakar is an influential artistic capital on the international scene, particularly in areas held dear to the house, such as fashion, film, dance, music, literature and contemporary art,” said Chanel in a statement. “More than just a show, this event will be part of a three-day cultural program accompanied by concrete action in terms of creative dialogue, sustainable development and the transmission of savoir-faire.”

Chanel has also hinted at a partnership with local artisans and students, connecting them to 19M, its craftsmanship hub in Paris. “By choosing Dakar, the House wishes to make the savoir-faire of its Métiers d’Art resonate with the artistic and cultural energy of the city,” said the French fashion brand in a statement.
Who could we expect to see at Chanel’s cultural festival in Dakar? Think friends of the house, like Pharrell Williams, who was instrumental to the brand making its first venture into Africa. In a recent interview, the musician shared how had discussed the idea with the late Chanel designer, Karl Lagerfeld.
