In the third part of our four-part series on fashion designers’ best-kept travel secrets—and how these locations have influenced their work—we talk to Ceylin Blige about the never-ending inspirations to be found along the Aegean coastline

If you’re looking for inspiration for your next travel destination, there is an unlikely source you’ve probably not even thought about: fashion designers. It makes sense, designers are always on the lookout for inspiration for their next collection and adventures are full opportunities that spark inspiration. In fact, many designer brands have been built on their founders’ insatiable wanderlust or the love they have for the place they call home. From the most secluded coves are in Turkey to the most untouched beaches in Thailand, fashion designers have been inspired by some of the world’s most beautiful locations.

In our four-part series, these globe-trotting designers spill their best-kept travel secrets to Tatler and tell us how these destinations have form the basis of their collections. In part three, we talk to Ceylin Bilge, the co-founder of Turkish brand Siedrés—which honours age-old Turkish textile production methods—on how the Aegean coast of her country inspires her creations.

What are some of your favourite places to visit in Turkey?
Bozburun and Selimiye are lovely towns with special charm. Similarly, Kaş and Fethiye have their own unique appeal. Fethiye has stunning spots like Butterfly Valley, Kabak Cove and Gemiler Island that look like they’re from a fairy tale. On the Aegean side of Turkey, you shouldn’t miss Assos and Cunda Island. Assos is a historic village with a mix of old and new architecture, while Cunda Island is known for its old-fashioned streets and amazing sea view.

Can you share a memorable story from one of those trips?
My childhood was spent around Fethiye and Bozburun. Every summer, our family and friends would come together for an unforgettable vacation. That’s why whenever I return to these places, it’s like a journey back to my childhood. The boat rides through those bays always hold a unique significance, evoking beautiful memories of carefree days spent with loved ones.

When is the best time to go?
For me, the best time to go is in early June or September. Personally, I prefer to visit during off-season, as it offers a more peaceful experience.

What are some unmissable things to do, see and eat?
In Bozburun, there is an amazing variety of restaurants. Among them, I have two top favourites: Bozburun Yacht Club and Manzara Restaurant. Both spots offer unique and unforgettable dining experiences.

How have these places inspired the birth of your brand?
Siedrés is the name of an imaginary town [envisaged by me and co-founder Emir Bilge]. Given that our brand draws inspiration from the Mediterranean region, our vision was to think of this seaside town where this ideal free-spirited woman lives—someone who adores the sea, sun and nature. This dream aligns perfectly with the essence of our brand. That’s why these places [in the Mediterranean region] have inspired the birth of Siedrés. The colour of the sea and the beautiful spots we saw played a big role in creating our brand.

How have some of these locations inspired your collections?
The patterns, colours and textures that catch our eye while taking a stroll along the shore hold immense sway over our creativity process. Even the simplest of elements, like a lone umbrella standing on the beach, can guide our colour selection process. Each detail we observe, whether it’s the natural harmony of sea and sky or the vibrant hues of local architecture, weaves its way into our designs.

If you could only pack a carry-on to these places, what would you bring?
I’d make sure to pack my swimsuits, bikinis, sunglasses, AirPods, a book, and most importantly, my iPad for sketching.

What’s one place you visited for the first time this year?
This year, I had the chance to visit Bademli in Dikili [district, Turkey]. It’s a seaside location with charming cottages and a relaxed vibe. And if anyone wishes to extend their stay, a quick five-minute boat ride takes you to Kalem Island. The sea is incredibly tranquil and crystal clear, providing a serene experience.
