These South Asian designers are dressing stars including Dua Lipa and Hailey Bieber, as well as other celebrities who are embracing sustainability
For the inauguration of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai, Hollywood star Zendaya stole the spotlight (again) on the red carpet rocking a ferociously stunning custom Rahul Mishra couture sari-inspired gown. Over her gold 3D bralette Zendaya wore a midnight blue number that not only sparkled with dazzling stars and crystals throughout, but also featured gorgeous and intricate embroidery of floral and animal motifs along the hem, including all the way around its sweeping train.
It is not the first time the Euphoria star has worn this emerging but undeniably talented Indian designer, who is best known for his intricately embroidered and heavily embellished saris, lehengas, sherwanis and kurtas. Mishra’s trademark style has gained such international popularity that the Delhi-based designer became the first Indian designer to show at Paris Couture Week in 2023. Rama Rao Jr (which is often shortened to Jr NTR), the lead actor in RRR, which won Best Original Song with its hit song Naatu Naatu, arrived on the champagne carpet wearing a Gaurav Gupta black bandhgala sherwani (close-necked Indian long coat) embroidered with a golden lion. But this isn’t the first time the Indian designer has dressed stars for big events. Gupta previously dressed Aishwarya Rai for the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and Cardi B for the 2023 Grammy Awards, and he is among the growing crop of Indian designers who are enjoying the international limelight of late.
