These South Asian designers are dressing stars including Dua Lipa and Hailey Bieber, as well as other celebrities who are embracing sustainability

For the inauguration of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai, Hollywood star Zendaya stole the spotlight (again) on the red carpet rocking a ferociously stunning custom Rahul Mishra couture sari-inspired gown. Over her gold 3D bralette Zendaya wore a midnight blue number that not only sparkled with dazzling stars and crystals throughout, but also featured gorgeous and intricate embroidery of floral and animal motifs along the hem, including all the way around its sweeping train.

It is not the first time the Euphoria star has worn this emerging but undeniably talented Indian designer, who is best known for his intricately embroidered and heavily embellished saris, lehengas, sherwanis and kurtas. Mishra’s trademark style has gained such international popularity that the Delhi-based designer became the first Indian designer to show at Paris Couture Week in 2023. Mishra often incorporates floral motifs, luxurious fabrics in rich jewel tones and pops of pastel into his designs.

However, Mishra isn’t the only South Asian designer to balle balle into the fashion industry right now. From Bollywood to Hollywood, celebrities have been seen on red carpets and their Instagram feeds wearing pieces by Indian designers. Here are five others you should know about.

1. Gaurav Gupta

For the 2023 Oscars, N.T. Rama Rao Jr (which is often shortened to Jr NTR), the lead actor in RRR, which won Best Original Song with its hit song Naatu Naatu, arrived on the champagne carpet wearing a Gaurav Gupta black bandhgala sherwani (close-necked Indian long coat) embroidered with a golden lion. But this isn’t the first time the Indian designer has dressed stars for big events. Gupta previously dressed Aishwarya Rai for the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and Cardi B for the 2023 Grammy Awards, and he is among the growing crop of Indian designers who are enjoying the international limelight of late.

2. AKHL Studio

AKHL Studio was founded by Akhil Nagpal in 2019 to create modern, luxurious womenswear using Indian hand-crafting techniques such asikat weaving, hand-printing and traditional embroidery such as zardozi and aari. Nagpal’s unique designs are also led by innovation, so he often incorporates ocean plastic and other upcycled materials to create complex textiles. Indian actress Radhika Apte wore his gradient-dyed, tiered fringed glass dress on the June 2022 cover of Cosmopolitan India.

3. Harri

Kerala-born Harikrishnan Keezhathil Surendran Pillai is the brains behind up-and-coming label Harri, which was responsible for singer Sam Smith’s viral latex look at the 2023 Brit Awards. Inflatable menswear, which intentionally pushes the boundaries of form, is Pillai’s signature. His graduate collection, which was shown at the London College of Fashion, blew up and put him on the radar of the British Fashion Council, which led to the showcase of his first collection at London Fashion Week in 2023.

4. Bloni

Bloni’s futuristic designs are a fusion of historical craftsmanship and emerging technologies. Akshat Bansal, who founded the fashion house in 2017, grew up among the handlooms at his family’s shop. He looks back at aspects of his Indian heritage and interprets them into the unusual silhouettes he’s now known for. He also embraces sustainability and often uses recycled materials and regenerated nylon such as econyl in his designs. Among Bloni’s fans is Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor, who posted a photo of herself wearing his designs as early as 2017.

5. Supriya Lele

British Indian designer Supriya Lele is representing a new generation of Indian women with her eponymous brand and contemporary approach to design. Her signature style includes the use of sheer fabrics that are layered, twisted and wrapped into dresses, tops and bottoms, which resonates with her Gen Z fans but still incorporates heritage prints and colours. Cool girls such as Dua Lipa, FKA Twigs and Hailey Bieber have worn her creations, and Lele’s show is often a favourite at London Fashion Week.
