From vintage Chanel to custom Versace, the Australian actress has been embracing her inner Barbie off-screen, too

“Come on, Barbie, let’s go party” has been the prevalent mood among the fans of Mattel’s most iconic doll, who, along with her friends, is coming to life on July 21 in Barbie directed by Greta Gerwig. And Australian actress Margot Robbie, who plays the titular character with Ryan Gosling as her Ken, clearly understood the assignment and has been serving up Barbie-inspired looks throughout the film’s press tour.

Robbie’s stylist, Andrew Mukamal, has created mainly pink ensembles that appear to pay homage to the Mattel doll’s playful yet polished style. In fact, many of Robbie’s outfits worn during interviews or on the red carpet even mirror actual Barbie doll costumes.

From working with luxury brands such as Valentino on custom designs to sourcing vintage Versace pieces, Mukamal has transformed Robbie into a real-life Barbie doll off-screen, and these are some of our favourite looks so far.

1. Vintage Barbie

The black-and-white Hervé Léger minidress Robbie wore to a press event in Sydney was inspired by the first Barbie ever, which was released in 1959 and wore a striking striped black and white swimsuit. The actress’s wavy ponytail echos the curly fringe with ponytail seen on the original doll, while the white cat-eye sunglasses lends a vintage, beach-y vibe to the look.

2. Jetsetter Barbie

Robbie was spotted at Sydney Airport channelling globetrotter Barbie vibes in a vintage Chanel look that layered a tweed pink blazer from the maison’s 1996 spring/summer collection over a white tube top and grey trousers. She completed her look with pink carry-on luggage that wouldn’t look out of place inside a Barbie toy box.

3. Preppy Barbie

While attending a press event at a Westfield shopping centre in Sydney, Robbie channelled preppy Barbie in a knitted turtleneck jumper and a pink metallic miniskirt—an archival set from Versace’s 1994 fall/winter collection. Robbie finished the look with lavender socks and white loafers.

4. Malibu Barbie

At a Los Angeles press event, Robbie went for a “pink and fabulous” Californian Barbie look in a custom Valentino hot pink halterneck minidress with white polka dots. Dressed up with white Manolo Blahnik pumps, a chunky Assael pearl bracelet and yellow Valentino bag, her look screamed plastic fantastic.

5. Day-to-Night Barbie

During the Seoul leg of the Barbie press junket, Robbie paid tribute to the 1985 Day-to-Night Barbie in two custom Versace ensembles.

For “day” she sported a camp yet chic “workwear” look that consisted of a fuschia pink power suit, complete with a matching hat, a tiny bag and an ’80s-style mobile phone. And for “night” she swapped the suit for a shimmery bustier paired with a full and layered skirt.

6. Fashion Fever Barbie

This silvery pink metallic minidress that Robbie wore to a red carpet event in Sydney could definitely be a throwback to Fashion Fever Barbie aesthetic. The dress, another archival piece, is from Versace’s 1994 fall/winter collection that was worn by model Claudia Schiffer at a party in 1994—the latter even took to Instagram to praise Robbie’s look.

7. Sixties Barbie

This hot pink skirt suit with crystal embellishments is a custom Moschino outfit that’s modelled after the 1964 Sparkling Pink Barbie, but updated with a shorter hemline. Robbie wore it to a press event in Seoul, and paired it with a matching pillbox hat, heart-shaped purse and peep-toe high-heeled mules.
