Find out more about Sarah Burton's successor at the iconic British luxury fashion brand

Kering announces Seán McGirr as the new creative director of the British luxury brand. Born in Dublin, McGirr is a graduate of Central Saint Martins in London, where he obtained a Master of Arts in Fashion in 2014 and began his career in the fashion industry as a stylist at Burberry and Vogue Hommes Japan. As a designer, he cut his teeth at Dries Van Noten in Antwerp and later, at Uniqlo’s creative offices in Tokyo and Paris under the guidance of Christophe Lemaire before joining JW Anderson in 2020, where he climbed the ranks to become head of ready-to-wear.

McGirr steps into big shoes, succeeding Sarah Burton, who spent most of her career at the brand after stepping into the role of creative director in 2010 after Alexander McQueen sadly took his own life.

“Alexander McQueen is a house we are passionate about, and we are confident that Seán McGirr will be able to pursue its journey with a new creative impetus. We look forward to opening this new chapter in the history of this unique brand,” says François-Henri Pinault, chairman and CEO of Kering.

The news comes soon after the presentation of both Sarah Burton and Gabriela Hearst’s final collection for the respective brands, Alexander McQueen and Richemont-owned Chloé—coinciding with the recent induction of Sabato De Sarno at Gucci, Matthieu Blazy’s replacement of Daniel Lee at Bottega Veneta, and Kering's decision to weather the storm of Balenciaga’s recent scandals with Demna remaining as creative director. It has yet again ignited conversations in the fashion industry about gender and race diversity.
