MB&F releases its first feminine watch – and it is a stunning beauty inside and out.

“The last thing I wanted to do was to take a masculine timepiece, resize it, put a different colour on it, and call it a ladies’ watch,” says Maximilian Büsser, watchmaker extraordinaire and founder of MB&F.

Büsser avoided these stereotypes with the Legacy Machine FlyingT. Solidly built with some imaginative touches, the FlyingT is a worthy addition to MB&F’s stable of three-dimensional kinetic art.

The white gold case retains the profile of its masculine predecessors but with more slender dimensions. As such the domed sapphire crystals on the front and back appear more pronounced.

The small hour-and-minute dial, positioned at ‘7’ and with serpentine hands, is angled at 50° so that only the wearer can see the time. This, it hopes, will create a more personal connection between watch and wearer.

The horological magic, however, is found at the centre of the dial where a flying tourbillon holds court. The movement is constructed vertically, with the tourbillon spinning above the dial. This is highly unusual as, in order to have the stability necessary for it to operate properly, the conventional flying tourbillon rarely leaves the comfortable confines of the dial.

Turn the watch around and you will discover a sun-shaped winding rotor crafted in precious metals. Comprising a total of 280 components, the in-house movement boasts four days of power reserve.

The temptation to adorn the watch with diamonds proves too hard to resist and there are three options to choose from. The most understated choice is the black lacquer dial with the case set with brilliant cut diamonds. For maximum flash, go for the case and dial set entirely in either brilliant cut or baguette diamonds. A diamond also topped the tourbillon cage in all versions.

This project has been a nice break from the norm for Büsser. “I created MB&F to do what I believe in. I was creating for myself, which was the only way we could have made all these crazy and audacious pieces over the years. But at some point there came a desire to create something for the women in my family. I’ve been surrounded by their influence all my life, so I gave myself the challenge to do something for them.”
