Korean hair expert, Sunny Yu of Leekaja Beauty Salon, reveals the Korean hair techniques behind Blackpink's stunning looks

Blackpink's first-ever livestream concert, The Show, was one of the most anticipated events in January 2021. With their charismatic stage presence, flawless choreography and vocals, it is no surprise that the livestream concert attracted more than 280,000 viewers that night. Now that the dust has settled, perhaps the question on the minds of Blackpink fans around the world is how to recreate the girl group's iconic hair looks from The Show.

And with the recent announcement that hair salons are allowed to reopen, there is no better time to think about changing up your hair in time for the Lunar New Year.

Sunny Yu, senior hair director of Leekaja Beauty Salon with over 20 years of experience in the industry, walks us through Blackpink's signature looks.

Jisoo's curtain bangs

One of the hair trends that will continue well into 2021, Jisoo's curtain bangs curl outwards to frame her face, blending with her wavy hair for a  fresh, youthful energy. According to Yu, the secret to the bangs, which remain voluminous and bouncy during long performances, is a C-curl perm on the bangs—with minimal styling required.

Rosé's long platinum blonde hair

Surprisingly, Yu reveals that this long platinum blonde hair is easy to achieve and maintain with colour shampoo, such as the Inebrya Ice Cream No-Yellow Shampoo. The tricky part is choosing the right undertones to match your skin shade.

"The reason Rosé pulls off this look so well is because her blonde hair incorporates beige undertones, which complements her luminous skin," shares the Korean hair expert.

However, Yu also advises that bleaching is a commitment that should depend on the existing condition of your hair to prevent further damage. For those already with damaged hair, she recommends the award-winning Cinderella treatment at Leekaja Beauty Salon to restore the strength of your hair before embarking on the journey towards platinum blonde.

The way to achieve Jennie's soft, cascading curls is to request for the wildly popular Korean S-Curl perm, with either a setting or digital perm machine, the latter being a more recent introduction to the Korean hair industry.

If you want to try this look at home, Yu recommends using a curling wand up to 28mm in size or the Dyson Airwrap in outwards curling motion away from the face, before setting it with a good amount of hairspray.

Lisa's see-through bangs

Suitable for all face shapes and easy to style with make-up and clothes for any occasion, Lisa's see-through bangs have been the talk of the town. At the concert, she had her bangs cut straight over her eyebrows but Yu shares that the see-through bangs can also be layered to the side for more feminine framing of the face, as Lisa herself and several other South Korean celebrities like Suzy and Song Hye Kyo have been spotted wearing.

A straight-forward look to achieve, see-through bangs normally only require a trim once a month.

Leekaja Beauty Salon is located in the Shoppes at Four Seasons Place, Kuala Lumpur.
