Jasiminne Yip

Agile with both a painting and makeup brush, we learn that Jasiminne Yip's secrets to always looking good include a good sunblock and one unassuming Japanese drugstore mascara.

Makeup is the art of dressing up one’s face to accentuate your best and hide the rest. And when it comes to art, among the first people to pop into our minds is Jasiminne Yip, our own high society darling who has also graced our May 2014 cover of Malaysia Tatler.

Frequently spotted with her trademark bold red lips at society events, we were very surprised to learn she doesn’t need foundation to achieve that porcelain-smooth and blemish-free complexion. It seems great skin is just another trait she is blessed with on top of her gift for the written word, art, illustration and design.

“My daily makeup style is simple and natural-looking,” she shares. “My key looks are flawless skin with my freckles showing through, filled in and defined eyebrows, a flick of liquid eyeliner, long eyelashes and just a lick of dusty rose lipstick. Sometimes I wear my signature red lips in the day, but usually I save that for the evening or a special occasion.”

Agile with both a painting and makeup brush, we got her to share with us some of her personal secrets to looking good no matter what the occasion.

The rule of thumb when it comes to makeup is to either have strong eyes or lips, never both. Which of your features do you usually play up more, or does that rule not apply to you?

I don’t agree that one must accentuate either the eyes or lips! My signature “glamourous look” emphasises both, with red lipstick and cat eye eyeliner.

Sunday brunch with friends

I start with a flawless base and dab on some NARS 'Orgasm' blush. I accentuate my eyes with dusky rose eyeshadow from (Urban Decay) Naked Palette 3, add a subtle flick of eyeliner and of course, my signature long lashes. I refuse to suffer the indignity of having red lipstick on my chin (inevitable when I eat anything that doesn’t fit on a fork or chopsticks) so I wear Chanel’s ‘Romantic’, a natural blush lipstick which if smeared all over my face, could well be mistaken for a champagne flush.

Jasiminne's picks:

  • Laneige BB Cushion
  • Urban Decay Naked 3 Eye Palette
  • NARS Blush in 'Orgasm'
  • Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Satin Lip Colour in 'Romantic'

Meeting  with an important client in the afternoon

I keep it simple with flawless skin, filled in eyebrows, a single flick of eyeliner, curled eyelashes with no mascara and a dab of natural blush lipstick.

Jasiminne's picks:

  • Shu Eumura 24k gold-plated eyelash curler
  • Kiss Me Heroine Make Liquid Eyeliner

A gala dinner

This is the rare occasion I will wear foundation and even so it’s just a tinted moisturiser by Laura Mercier. Any imperfections are covered by Cle de Peau concealer. I enhance my cheekbones with NARS 'Orgasm' blush and Nars 'Malaysia' bronzer. A  dusting of Dior Night Diamond highlights and illuminates my complexion with sheer, sparkling dust. I create a smokey eye look with Chanel 'Les 4 Ombres 93' Smoky Eye Palette and of course top it all off with my favourite Chanel 'La Fascinante' red lipstick.

Jasiminne's picks:

  • Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser
  • Chanel Les 4 Ombres Eye Makeup
  • Dior Night Diamonds Highlighter
  • Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Lipstick in 'La Fascinante'
  • Cle de Peau concealer

Share with us your personal tips and tricks to looking looking great on days when you’re not feeling your best.

On days when I’m not feeling my best, I hide behind my Bailey Nelson reading glasses and draw attention to my lips. My upper lips is unevenly shaped, as you can see from my Malaysia Tatler May issue cover, so I paint it over with red lipstick to create the perfect shape for an added boost in confidence.

Mascaras are perhaps the fastest and quickest way to bring out the eyes on days when we’re too lazy to go the whole mile with our makeup. Which is your all-time favourite mascara?

Of all mascaras I’ve tried from high-end to drugstore, I find the most effective ones are the mascaras by Japanese drugstore brand, ‘Kiss Me’ line ‘Heroine Make’. Only the Japanese can make my poker straight eyelashes stand to attention! I curl my lashes with Shu Eumura’s gold plated eyelash curler. I first add two coats of Heroine Make Long & Curl mascara followed by another coat of Heroine Make Impact Frame & Curl mascara. The results are long and thick enough to rival extensions, but still look natural.

What’s the one makeup product you cannot leave the house without?

Sunblock! Sunblock is an absolute must. Even when I’m at home and can’t be bothered with makeup, I must wear at least SPF30 on my face. When I’m out and about, I wear SPF 50. Laneige BB Cushion goes on my face over moisturiser and for my body, I use No.7 Whitening Body UV Protection.
