Out of more than 6,300 products submitted for consideration, the Red Dot Jury only considered 1.1% or 69 submissions worthy of the Red Dot: Best of the Best, the highest honour. And from that tally, only two entries from horology were deemed to be good enough to be included in the final list.

TAG Heuer’s highly lauded smartwatch, the Connected Modular 45, impressed the judges with its original concept of a connected module that is interchangeable with a Swiss mechanical module, in this case a chronograph tourbillon. While the smart module was a collaboration with Intel and Google, the mechanical module’s Heuer-02 skeleton movement was developed and made entirely in-house, which gave it bragging rights as the world’s first Swiss-made smarwatch.

To match this elevated realisation of a smartwatch was a luxurious case with three drawers and a bureau-type display. Customised options include a range of elegant materials and colours.

The second watch that wowed the jury was Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo Automatic, which nabbed the IF Design Award earlier this year. A celebration of Italian design and Swiss watchmaking, the Octo Finssimo Automatic features a unique octagonal case inspired by the 310 AD Roman Massentius Basilica, the largest building in the ancient Roman Forum.

This ultra-thin timepiece is crafted in sandblasted stainless steel with a crown set in ceramic and powered by the BVL 138-Finissimo calibre decorated with Cote de Geneve and perlage finishing that are visible on the transparent caseback.
