Katrina Ponnampalam and Andrew Chia

A church wedding made it necessary for Katrina to cover up but she saw it as an opportunity to exercise her love for lace.

Katrina Ponnampalam was every bit the vision of a glowing bride during her breathtaking wedding to Andrew Chia.

One look at the grand ballroom during their reception dinner and there’s no missing the coordination that went into the planning. Yellow and white was the theme across all aspects, from the table setting and cake to the dresses donned by her bridesmaids and mother.

Katrina herself shone in a long-sleeved gown that, though modest, didn’t lack any wow factor due to the use of exquisite French lace that dressed her shoulders and arms.

It was another pleasant surprise when we learned who dressed her and her bridal entourage: “My wedding dress, all my bridesmaids’ dresses and my mother’s gown were all designed under my fashion label Wilka,” she reveals. “ I was involved in the entire design process from the start to finish.”

She shares with us more.

Best of both worlds

A church wedding made it necessary for Katrina to cover up but she saw it as an opportunity to exercise her love for lace.

“Although I had long sleeves, I made sure that bit was all lace so I can still show some skin while looking modest and classy. I love lace and I figured I may or may not have the chance to wear white French lace, so what better time to use it than for my wedding dress!” (swipe left for next page)

A personal touch

Her dress was a custom own design that she saw to from the ideation of the design to the materializing of it. Additional Swarovski crystals and pearls made it truly one-of-a-kind.

“The Swarovski crystals and pearls were sewn on ourselves; they did not come with the lace. We wanted to add more to it but in a subtle way. They totally brought out the flower motifs on the lace more. The belt and the veil as well as the cape were embellished too." (swipe left for next page)

Going the extra mile

No expense was spared in creating the dress she would be wearing for one of the most important occasions of her life.

“To get it to look exactly how I envisioned it, I even took it out of the country for beadwork. It isn’t quite the dream dress from when I was a little girl but I love it. It’s very much inspired by Elie Saab’s designs, who is my favourite designer.”
