For the effortlessly stylish

The combination of a retro-stylish cushion case and a handsome blue dial makes Piaget Polo S an irresistible proposition for the man who appreciates understated style. Visible on the caseback is the excellent automatic 1110P movement given that extra distinction with a blue oscillating weight.

For the worldly-wise

Boasting an ultra-thin cushion case, the Drive de Cartier’s classical design complete with a silver dial, Roman numerals and blue sword-shaped hands is a perfect fit for the sophisticated gentleman. Go all the way with an 18k yellow gold case and a crown topped with sapphire.

For the jet-setter

Consider Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Geographic WT that displays the time in 24 cities at a glance for the man that is always on the move. The complication also takes into consideration daylight saving time indicated by the asterisk next to the affected cities. Design-wise, it is partly inspired by the 1969 Memovox that has since become synonymous with adventure.

For the happy-go-lucky

The Tudor 1926 is the watch of choice for doting dad and Taiwanese pop icon Jay Chou. An ode to classic watchmaking traditions, its simplicity belies a wealth of design details, from the domed dial with blue Arabic numerals alternating with arrow-shape hour markers to the finely decorated automatic movement endowed with 38 hours of power reserve

For the athletic gentleman

The sporty character of the Vacheron Constantin Overseas has been enhanced with an all-new black dial that contrasts strikingly against the white chronograph sub-dials, alluding to the “panda” dials of motorsports watches in the 1960s. Bolstering its narrative is a stainless steel case with the distinctive six-sided bezel, a tactile black rubber strap and the powerful Calibre 5200 fitted with 22k gold oscillating weight.

For the design lover

Art Deco codes permeate throughout the Corum Golden Bridge Stream, from the clean lines of the rectangular case to its iconic baguette movement. With parts constructed horizontally parallel to one another for a bridge-like structure, it seems only apt that the movement is decorated on its sides with a miniature version of the Golden Gate Bridge, thus realising a slice of architectural wonder for the wrist.

For the space geek

A tribute to the Apollo 8 space mission, the Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 features a partly skeletonised dial embellished with laser-ablated parts to create a likeness of the moon’s surface. The overall blackness of the watch – the case is made of black zirconium ceramic – is balanced out with yellow accents, notably on the seconds hand and the lining of the perforated leather strap.

For the unconventional

By all accounts, Girard-Perregaux Laureato with its octagonal bezel on an integrated case is a nice and safe choice. Update it with the very contemporary ceramic material and a skeleton dial, and the Laureato Skeleton Ceramic suddenly looks sort of badass. The entirely skeletonised automatic movement, including the 18k pink gold rotor, gives the illusion of airiness but is actually quite robust with a frequency of 4Hz and a power reserve of 54 hours.

For the dive enthusiast

The credentials on Ball Watch Firemann NECC II are impressive. Designed for serious underwater adventures, it has a shock resistance of 5,000Gs, anti-magnetism up to 4,800A/m and a depth capability of 300m. The integrity of the stainless steel case is enhanced with a coating of titanium carbide for a hardness level just below that of a diamond. In addition, it is endowed with the patented micro gas tubes that offer perfect time-reading illumination in darkened conditions for up to 25 years. That it looks good on land too – metallic blue rotating bezel, black dial and rubber strap – is icing on the cake.

For the rebel heart

Steer off the wristwatch route with MB&F The Fifth Element table clock that is also – wait for it – a weather station! It comes equipped with a barometer that measures air pressure, a hygrometer that shows the amount of water vapour in the air and a thermometer that also calculates the average kinetic energy of a substance. Created in collaboration with L’Epee 1839, each element is detachable and can be placed anywhere you like on a main frame that resembles a UFO.
