Unique square watches

From jackpot machines, dials made of moon dust to flight-heading indicators, these five unique square watches from Corum, Girard-Perregaux and Romain-Jerome are investment pieces for all watch enthusiasts.

Owning a square-shaped watch is not something new to the watch scene. In fact, it was the on-demand form of wristwatch in the early 20th century, instead of the round-the-mill circular watches.

Unlike its circular counterpart, square watches are meant not for everyone. It takes a certain charm and guts in the gentleman or elegance for the lady to be able to carry off the angular shape.

Even when choices are less compared to round watches, there are still plenty to choose from. For those who are indecisive of which to invest on, take a look at these five square watches – each with its own one of a kind feature – that will never go out of style.

Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 Jackpot Tourbillon

Are slot machines the first thing you head to when visiting the casino? If it’s a yes, then the Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 Jackpot Tourbillon is the perfect watch for you. Launched in 2007, this was an unprecedented creation that had the world on its knees, by introduing a functional jackpot machine installed in the watch.

All decked out in pink gold and intricate machinery (a total of 500 parts), Girard-Perregaux had launched itself to international fame with this one creation that can bring a smile to even the most solemn face – at the price of 625,000 USD (RM 2 million).

Romain Jerome Moon Orbiter Speed Metal

Rounding the universe for the past year, the Romain Jerome Moon had successfully landed at Baselworld 2014 with a new look finished with black PVD.

Like the Titanic-DNA collection, Romain Jerome always uses exotic materials to create its timepieces. In this case, The Moon Orbiter uses metal from the Apollo 11 spacecraft to create the frame and actual moon dust on its dial.

The new Moon Orbiter Speed Metal gives a complete view of the unique architecture and geometry of the three-dimensional flying tourbillon which is placed at 9 o’clock with its new design.

Bell and Ross BR01 Heading Indicator

For aviation fanatics, Bell and Ross is a household name with its 50 years of experience in collaboration with Dassault Falcon. Known for its wide range of square watches and quirky designs, Bell and Ross is a must-have when it comes to the cubic shape.

Just like its name, the Bell and Ross BR01 Heading Indicator borrows the graphic of a flight-heading indicator for its dial design. The compass component uses the North point as the hour hand while the airplane is used to indicate the minute hand, giving an illusion to the wearer, as though they are reading from a flight control panel. A true aviation-inspired beauty with only 999 pieces produced for sale.

Corum Bridges Golden Bridge Automatic

Making its first appearance in the 1980s, the Corum Bridges made waves with its unique vertical movement that was unlike any other in the industry. This year at the Baselworld 2014, the company released a new version of the ground-breaking angular wrist watch in titanium.

The new combination of gold and titanium creates a contrasting look that is destined to be a new classic and the exclusive Corum CO313 caliber with its linear oscillating weight, set off to its best advantage by the metallised sapphire dial – marking a new benchmark in watchmaking history.

Franck Muller Crazy Hour Long Island Tourbillon

The main question with the Franck Muller Crazy Hour collection is “who cares what time it is?”, which is essentially what the watch is all about with its numbers scrambled randomly without any singular order.

Reaching its 10th Anniversary, this signature Crazy Hour movement, where the hour and minute hand jump according to the random numbers on the dial, needs no further explanation. This watch is perfect for those who want extravagance within eccentricity in a singular wrist accessory – just like having a afternoon tea party with the Mad Hatter.
