It's been a great year for our local food scene and we've had the chance to speak to many talented chefs throughout that time. Ever wondered what chefs snack on? What foods they dislike or how they determine if a restaurant has heart? Then you've come to the right place.

1. Darren Chin – What Food Can't You Live Without?

We're big fans of DC Restaurant and it consistently ranks high among some of the best restaurants Kuala Lumpur has to offer. As the winner of our T.Dining Best Restaurants 2018 for the Best Independent Restaurant, chef Darren Chin was one of the culinary titans we were eager to feature on our Ask A Chef series. For this year's inaugural episode, he took us to his favourite Thai restaurant to talk food and his ambitions but the main kicker we wanted to know was what he couldn't live without.

2. Carrie Scully – What Food Will You Never Order?

The bubbly chef Carrie Scully of Tiki Taka was the star of our next episode, taking us to her favourite spot for sweet treats and a cup of joe at Ben's Bake Shop over at Plaza Batai. We uncovered what this Penangite's ideal breakfast, lunch and dinner would be, how far the extent of her sweet tooth went and most importantly, what the one food she would never ever ever order was. Under her guidance, Tiki Taka won Best New Restaurant for our first ever T.Dining Best Restaurants 2018 awards.

3. Jeff Ramsay – What Do You Like To Cook For Your Kids?

The creative force behind Babe, one of the city's most playfully enjoyable restaurants, surprised us when he told us that he would be taking us for authentic Hong Kong beef brisket noodles in Pudu for his Ask A Chef debut episode. Jeff Ramsay, the half-American half-Japanese gourmet chef, was a natural in front of the camera, where he revealed what he liked to cook for his kids, his one true food vice and what he currently snacks on when home.

4. Raymond Tham – What Is Modern Malaysian Food?

Who better to learn what modern Malaysian food is all about than from the man who runs Beta KL, the ambitious modern Malaysian restaurant making waves for its inventive local fare. Incredibly friendly and eager to share his passion with us, Raymond Tham took us to one of his favourite spots for roasted meats in Subang Jaya, best enjoyed with rice or noodles à la Cantonese fare. Curious to read what he said? So were we.

5. Chef Wan – Why Malaysian Food Will Always Be Number 1

For Malaysia Day, we chose to feature Malaysia's culinary ambassador to the world and T.Dining's Local ChampionChef Wan. His lunch spot of choice? Lai Po Heen for dim sum. There, we spoke about intricacies of our local cuisine, ranging from why Malaysian food is the best to how the Malaysian palate has evolved since he started his career in food. This episode was a love letter to Malaysian food, from a true blue Malaysian.

6. Darren Teoh – What's A Telltale Sign That A Restaurant Has Heart?

Dewakan is one of Malaysia's most exciting restaurants, challenging diners to rethink what Malaysian food really is through clever gastronomical delights that shine a light on ingredients indigenous to our nation. "Fast food" seems to take on a different form to Darren Teoh, choosing to have his Ask A Chef debut episode at his local neighbourhood chicken rice shop in Taman Paramount.

7. Philip Leong – How Do You Celebrate Christmas & What Do You Eat?

For the first time ever, we have two chefs for our year-end Ask A Chef special, with Philip Leong from Nobu Kuala Lumpur making up one half of the episode. Switching things up, we took a trip to his place of work to find out how we spent the end of the year festivities. If you're just as curious as we were as to how the man who runs one of the largest luxury group of restaurants in the world spends his Christmas, this it it.

8. Malcolm Goh – How Do You Celebrate Christmas & What Do You Eat?

The other half of the coin for this special feature, chef Malcolm Goh of Define:food graciously allowed us to swing by the restaurant to talk about how he celebrated the holiday period. His answer may or may not surprise you, but you'll definitely be shocked to find out what his favourite festive foods are. Because we certainly were.
