Not A Sweet-Tooth? Savour These 6 Alternative ‘Cakes’ Instead

“It’s too sweet!” is a common utterance from many Malaysians when come face-to-face with cake. Here are 6 alternatives for birthday boys and girls who prefer the savoury side of life:

1/6Cheese Naan Cake At RSMY Best Cheese Naan

No two cheese naans are created equally. While most mamaks scatter a meagre amount of cheese on theirs, RSMY (an acronym for Restoran Selera Malaysia) certainly doesn't skimp on the goods. Mouthwatering webs of cheese will pool on your plate when you pull each fluffy naan apart.

What more epic way to celebrate your birthday than by getting a whole stack?

Shareen and Siti, the darling duo behind Siti Li Dining, are zealous when it comes to keeping their family recipes alive, which includes Siti's cekodok or deep-fried banana balls. Roughly the size of glass marbles, the teatime treats are smaller than what you'd typically get elsewhere, but crunchier, and dangerously easy to snack on as one would with popcorn.

"Malay recipes so varied from region to region, family to family, and hand to hand," said Siti. "Maybe this is why it's so tricky to pen a cookbook on Malay food culture. For our cekodok, we use a mix of bananas; Cavendish bananas alone would make the batter too powdery."

A small bowlful of Siti Li's famed cekodok costs RM15 whereas a dressed up 'cake' will set you back by RM75. Ramadan special: Priced at RM50, takeaway boxes of cekodok are available for pick up between 4.30-6pm.
