Both luxurious and utilitarian, Wagyu katsu sando (breaded Wagyu sandwiches) are dainty enough to eat one-handedly sans fork or Laguiole knife. Here's a throwback to all the Japanese beef cutlet sandwiches we've demolished in the Klang Valley. This story was first published in August 2020 and was updated in March 2021.

Beast by Big

Boasting grade 3 on the BMS scale, the Wagyu in BEAST's Katsu Sando is so tender, it's practically 'buttery'. Served between pillow-soft toast and paired with crispy fries and acidic pickles to cut through the grease, the set meal is a nice difference from the usual burger and fries.

Kikubari

Quality and quantity coexist at Kikubari, whose team churned out katsu sandwiches at factory-like speed during MCO. Chef Jun Wong's colourful katsu sando series saw a wide selection of fillings ranging from unagi to corn, but it was the Ebi Katsu Sando (prawn katsu sandwich) that received the highest acclaim; the sandwich is still available for delivery or dine-in today.

A seasonal item with celebrity status, the Wagyu Katsu Sando is another one to look out for—how often does a sandwich get its own portrait hung up in a restaurant?

Sushi Ryu

Neatly chopped into almost perfect cubes and stamped with Sushi Ryu's namesake (the Japanese character for ryuu or 'dragon'), the Wagyu Katsu Sando at Sushi Ryu seems compact, but proves extremely filling. In an unprecedented move, the Japanese restaurant was the first to offer Beyond Meat Katsu Sando for plant-based diners. Those who recall our epic taste test of the Wagyu and Beyond Meat Katsu Sando at Sushi Ryu might remember how both sandwiches were scored on aroma, appearance, taste and texture.

Ushi at The St Regis Kuala Lumpur

Located under the same roof, Ushi is to land as Taka is to sea. While the latter specialises in premium sushi and sashimi, the former proudly serves Ozaki beef, the only Wagyu beef named after its farmer. Ushi's Wagyu Katsu Sando is lent a unique slant thanks to a special tonkatsu sauce (a little bird informed us that the chef's secret recipe contains blue cheese and blueberries).

With or without foie gras? These are the kinds of first world problems one encounters when pouring over Yakuza by Dark's food delivery menu. Wavering between RM138 and RM168, their Wagyu Katsu Sando don't come cheap, but that's to be expected when premium ingredients like caviar and gold leaf find their way into almost every dish. Our Muslim readers will be pleased to know that their whole menu, which encompasses lobster rolls and rice bowls, is pork-free.
