The state government’s vaccination initiative is a response to Selangorians’ gripes about the slow rollout of vaccines of the national Covid-19 vaccination programme

Selgate Corporation, a conglomerate in the healthcare industry covering healthcare management, hospitals and clinics, and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Selangor (PKNS), has announced that employers who wish to procure Covid-19 vaccines for their staff can now register their interest through the state’s SELangkah contact tracing mobile application or Selangkah Vax.

“SELangkah has opened registration to companies that are interested to get the vaccines for their workers for their staff,’’ Selangor’s public health exco Dr Siti Mariah said in a statement. However, she has yet to clarify the source of the vaccines.

Earlier this week, the Selangor government denied a viral WhatsApp message claiming that the state was rolling out 500,000 doses of China's Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine for Selangorians. In a statement, Dr Siti urged the public to obtain authentic information through Selangor chief minister Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari's and her official Facebook accounts.

A check by Tatler Malaysia of the SELangkah contact tracing mobile application and Selangkah Vax confirmed that bookings are now live, with detailed steps from registration to payment, and remote monitoring post-vaccinations. Upon successful registration, employers will receive a booking ID and an acknowledgement that a quotation will be sent via e-mail within the next three working days. A 50 per cent deposit is required upon confirmation of the appointments.

For businesses with more than 1,500 employees, the vaccinations will be done by the task force at the respective companies. Businesses with less than 1,500 employees will be assigned a panel clinic for their vaccinations. Additionally, it also appears that the programme will open up registrations to individuals and families in Selangor as well.

However, no further information about the type of vaccine, the price of the doses, or the rollout date hasn't been made available as of yet. In a press conference this afternoon, Dr Siti said they'll procure the best available National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA)-approved vaccines in Malaysia which are Pfizer-BioNTech, Sinovac, or AstraZeneca.

Meanwhile, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari confirmed that more beds and intensive care unit (ICU) apparatus will be provided to treat Covid-19 patients in the state. “A total of 300 beds and an ICU ward will be provided, and 1,300 beds will be added at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS)," Amirudin said in a statement after chairing the Selangor Security Council special committee meeting on Monday.

The recent spike of Covid-19 cases in Selangor has become a major concern for the state government, with the new daily infections soaring to 1,753 as of yesterday (May 18). The increase in the number of Covid-19 patients in Selangor has also overwhelmed MAEPS, which is being used as the Covid-19 Integrated Quarantine and Treatment Centre (PKRC).
