1. Penang, Malaysia

According to International Living, Penang has been a firm favourite among savvy expats for decades–and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why. Fondly regarded as the food capital of Malaysia, the island is home to heritage buildings, interactive street murals, cafes and bars, and sandy beaches, perfect for those with plenty of time to spare and prefer to have a variety of things to do minus the hustle and bustle.

2. Bali, Indonesia

Surf's up because the paradise island of Bali has also been included on the list (we'd be shocked if it wasn't). The 'rockstar' of Indonesia's archipelago of over 17,500 islands, Bali offers the best of the highs and the lows: towering volcanic mountains, sprawling rice terraces, lush green forests, stunning temples, beaches of sorts, beautiful turquoise waters, and colourful coral reefs. 3. Koh Samui, Thailand
